February 27, 2008  Pioneer Park Owl Nest in a broken off tree

I was walking around in the snow below this nest.  I knew she was watching me. I asked her if she had eggs or babies.  She lifted her tail and showed me her baby.   March 01, 2008 Pioneer Park

A bad ice storm hit and I knew this guy had fledged, I braved the weather because I was curious to see if his parents would protect him from the storm.  I was unable to locate either adult.  March 21, 2008 Pioneer Park

His sibling still in the nest looked worse.  March 21, 2008 Pioneer Park

The next day they were both as good as new.  March 22, 2008

After the storm I was looking around for this guy. I assumed he would be up in a tree.  There is a path through the area so I was looking up.  I got a funny feeling and I turned around - I had walked right past this guy on a small tree at eye level.  The second I saw him I thought I was in trouble. I quickly without even thinking dove for cover. I was sure one of the adults were going to attack me. I had read in a wildlife book that getting attacked by a Great Horned Owl was like getting hit in the head with a 2x4 with 16 penny nails through it.  Well I did not get attached and I never have been.  But I am always respectful. This guy would not take his eyes off of me.  I had to use my camera remote control to get the previous shot.

I tell people - finding an owl is like Where's Waldo?  P.S. I use center spot focus

Both Fledged. May 01, 2010 Morton Arboretum East Side

I was following a Scarlet Tanager and he was very tolerant of my presence.  A young boy came down the path, making a lot of noise.  The tanager took of for parts unknown. I politely waited for the family to pass. But before I resumed my trek, I looked up - this guy was not bothered by the boy.  He was bothered that I spotted him and promptly took off after the tanager.

I returned a few days later to try to spot him again. Instead I found this one with some food.  She was being mobbed by robins. When I was done taking her picture I thanked her.  She looked at me as if to say " You missed the best part"

She flew over to her babies.  I saw that these guys had already fledged.  But I knew I would be looking in this area for the nest next year.  May 19, 2010 Morton Arboretum West Side
